Overview
BrowseBack is a Chrome extension that creates a searchable "photographic memory" of your browsing activity. This privacy policy explains how BrowseBack handles your data.
Our Privacy Commitment
BrowseBack is 100% privacy-first:
- All data processing happens locally on your device
- No data is ever transmitted to external servers
- No analytics, tracking, or telemetry
- No third-party services or APIs (except Chrome's built-in AI)
- You own your data completely
Data Collection
BrowseBack collects and stores the following data locally on your device only:
Web History
- URLs of websites you visit
- Page titles
- Timestamps of visits
Website Content
- Screenshots of active tabs (captured every 10 seconds by default)
- Text content extracted from web pages
- Audio transcripts from tabs (when using transcription feature)
How Data is Used
All collected data is used solely for the extension's core functionality:
- Creating a searchable index of your browsing history
- Enabling search by content, time, or natural language queries
- Displaying timeline views of your browsing activity
- Answering questions about previously viewed content using local AI
Data Storage
- Location: All data is stored in your browser's IndexedDB (local storage)
- Retention: You control retention period (3 days to 1 year) via settings
- Size: Unlimited storage quota is used to accommodate large browsing histories
- Security: Data is protected by Chrome's standard security mechanisms
Data Sharing
We do not share, sell, or transfer any user data.
- No data leaves your device
- No external servers are contacted
- No third-party analytics or tracking
- No advertising networks
AI Processing
BrowseBack uses Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano) for:
- Text extraction (OCR) from screenshots
- Natural language search queries
- Audio transcription
- Content summarization
All AI processing happens on-device. Chrome's built-in AI runs locally and does not send data to external servers.
User Controls
You have complete control over your data:
- Capture Settings: Adjust capture interval or disable automatic capture
- Retention Settings: Set how long data is kept (auto-deletion)
- Data Deletion: Delete all captured data with one click in settings
- Export: Export your data at any time (using browser's IndexedDB tools)
Permissions Explained
BrowseBack requests the following permissions:
- tabs: Capture screenshots and access tab metadata (title, URL)
- storage: Save user preferences locally
- unlimitedStorage: Store large amounts of browsing history without quota limits
- scripting: Extract text content from web pages
- sidePanel: Display the search interface in Chrome's side panel
- tabCapture: Capture audio for transcription features
- <all_urls>: Access any website you visit to capture and index content
All permissions are used exclusively for core functionality. No data is transmitted externally.
Children's Privacy
BrowseBack does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The extension is designed for general use and does not target children.
Changes to Privacy Policy
We may update this privacy policy occasionally. Changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date above. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
Data Security
We take data security seriously:
- All data stored in Chrome's secure IndexedDB
- No network transmission of user data
- No external dependencies (except Chrome's built-in AI)
- Open source code available for audit
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access all your data (stored locally in your browser)
- Delete your data at any time (via extension settings)
